Tree Facts

Do Your Trees Look Like This?

Don't panic! This is an example of normal autumn needle cast. The brown is mostly toward the middle of the tree. Most evergreens will look similar to these photos during the period of August through October.

Tree Trimming and tree removal not only improves the overall look of your property, but it also strengthens the health of the remaining trees and increases overall fire safety.

When a tree is planted, it takes years to recover from the stress.  Roots must become adjusted to the new site and establish the ability to obtain nutrients from the soil.   Depending on the size of the tree, it may take up to seven years before it grows.   A rough rule of thumb is "for each inch of trunk diameter, allow one year for the tree roots to establish."

The best way to tell a Douglas Fir tree from a Spruce tree is by examining the needles.  Douglas Fir needles are flat and soft, while Spruce needles are square in cross section and are sharp to the touch.  Another way to tell a Douglas Fir from a Spruce is the cones.  Douglas Fir cones are unusual looking with sharp bracts protruding from the scales, while Spruce cones are narrow and cylindrical, with a shiny appearance and are smooth to the touch.

In spite of the term "Evergreen" all coniferous trees naturally will have seasonal browning and can lose up to 30% of their needles in autumn.  These brown needles will fall off during late autumn wind storms, making trees appear "healthy" again.
